This definitive work on the Huguenot emigration to Virginia contains lists of refugees and emigrants and several
passenger lists, the longest and most valuable of which is a record of baptisms at Manakin-Town, 1721-1754, which
gives the names of godparents (usually relatives) and other genealogical data. An eighty-eight page Appendix contains a
several-generation genealogy of each of the families listed in the sub-title above, while the index contains the names of
    approximately 4,000 individuals.
"In 1700 the frontier was still just upstream a ways, in the more hostile world of granite, islands, and rapids above the tidewater. In July a ship sailed into
    Hampton
filled with 207 Huguenots, exiled for years from their cozy, prosperous villages in France, who hoped to build a French Protestant town in the
    Norfolk
    area.
They were welcomed by Governor Nicholson with disturbing news; their destination had been changed and they were to go up the James. William Byrd I, inheritor of
land in the Falls area and influential in the colony, had had the last word on their fate. They were to settle in the wilderness above the Fall Line, securing that land
    for the white man.

    Excerpted from
In River Time: The Way of the James
    , by Ann Matthews Woodlief
    Bonus Book #2
This is the standard work on the Huguenot emigration to
    America
. Baird's work is so thorough that there are few Huguenot names
for which some new fact or illustration is not supplied.
The bulk of the work is devoted to the important emigration of French
    Protestants (via the
    Netherlands
    and
    Great Britain
) in the last quarter of the 17th century to the time of the
    Revolutionary War.
Throughout the text, in both narratives and records, there is a profusion of genealogical detail on the early Huguenot families of
    Connecticut
    ,
    Massachusetts
    ,
    New Jersey
    ,
    New York
    ,
    Rhode Island
    ,
    South Carolina
, and Virginia, later families having dispersed to
    Pennsylvania
and other states. In addition, extensive genealogical notices are
given in footnotes, with references to sources,
thus serving as a guide to further information.
A book that has a longstanding appeal and is so complete that it still remains the basic source book for research into Huguenot origins. A reference that should be read by anyone who
has just discovered their Huguenot roots. Any library that has even a small Huguenot collection will need this book as the basic source book. All Huguenot descendants should have a
copy of this book to read and help understand the meaning of liberty and freedom we as Americans hold so dear."--
