"Whilst visiting Southwest Virginia I was often urged by my relatives and friends (descendants of associates of a past generation) to write some " historical sketches "
of the earliest patents and settlers of that section, and also of those traditions which were fast fading from the memories of the " oldest inhabitants," and which
I alone could recall. This obligation to my friends was pressed with renewed earnestness in the autumn of 1897, and in order partially to discharge it, I, aided
by my friends, Judge F. B. Hutton and others, examined the records of Washington county, so as to verify dates and refresh
my memory about the periods of many incidents.
The Mayor of Abingdon did me the kindness to put the records of the town into my hands and allowed me to make such extracts from them as I chose. With
these aids and with court papers, courteously furnished by Mr. James L. White, I entered upon the composition of this little book, painfully conscious that
the duty had been too long deferred."
Washington county was formed in 1776 from Fincastle County. It was named for George Washington, who was then commander-in-chief
of the Continental Army. Washington County has the distinction of being the first geographical region to be named after the president of the United States.
In 1786 the northwestern part of Washington County became Russell County. In 1814 the western part of what remained of Washington County was combined with parts of Lee County and Russell County to form Scott County. In 1832 the northeastern part of Washington County was combined with part of Wythe County to form Smyth County. With the incorporation of the town of Goodson as the independent city of Bristol in 1890, Washington County assumed its present size.
The county is divided into seven magisterial districts: Harrison, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Taylor, Tyler, and Wilson. Towns include Abingdon, Damascus, Glade Spring, and Saltville.
The Great Indian Trail that ran down the Valley of Virginia was a 'superhighway' for tribes who followed the grazing buffalo. It soon became the
Great Wagon Road as settlers from Philadelpia and New Jersey began migrating in growing numbers for better land and new lives, some continuing as far as Georgia. The intersection with the Wilderness road west to Kentucky was in the Abingdon area of Washington County.
