who saved the Charter, and had it hidden in the ''Charter Oak," when
Andros
demanded its surrender.
Our ancestors were in fact among the founders of

, the first English settlement
west of
Massachusetts
, in 1635; of
New Haven

Milford
,
Guilford
,
Branford and
New London
in
Connecticut
; of Southampton on Long Island and
Sandwich
,
Mass.
; while
of the sixty-four men who founded Newark, New Jersey, in 1666-67, thirteen were our direct ancestors.
